Battle of the Greeks

 by: Jordan Wales

Monday's relay race was the kick off for Greek Week and ended with each organization letting their banners fly on Flowerhill to celebrate Greek Unity. Greek Week is a six day competition that ends with an award ceremony Saturday afternoon to crown the sorority and fraternity winners.

This year held some surprises for the organizations. Not only was the newcomer, Fiji, present, but the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils had created new events. They held a beach volleyball tournament in the sand courts and took a cookout competition to the university's lake. Order of Omega partnered with the councils to create "Mega Musical Chairs". This event was open to the public, with a giant circle of chairs taking up half of Flowerhill as students walked as slowly as possible to ensure they got a seat when the music stopped. Mega Musical Chairs also incorporated a costume contest to see which organization could be the most patriotic.

The competition can get fierce, but the entire purpose is to create Greek Unity and bring each organization closer together as IFC and Panhellenic members. Junior Savanna Gunn, points out that it may pull people apart as individuals' competitive natures come out, but at the end of the day the week celebrates the common bond shared between a commitment to greek letters.
However, not everyone on campus is on board with Greek Week. Wednesday morning the Greek Unity banners were found vandalized. They were ripped and covered with spray paint. Student Life nor the campus has any idea who might have done this, but Greek Week continues on.

The event will come to a close on Saturday with the last leg being a community service meeting known as the "Big Event". The Big Event is not new to Montevallo and every organization on campus will take part from athletic teams to honors' societies. Students will rake, paint, shovel, and clean homes and stores around the town as a way to bring the university and the city closer together.

Saturday afternoon holds the awards ceremony where the winning sorority and fraternity will be crowned with Delta Gamma and Alpha Kappa Lambda defending their championship titles from last spring. For more information about Greek Life click here or contact Student Life at (205-665-6565).
