Alabaster gets a 'Clean Sweep'

By: Kayla Guillot

From the time the first pollen puff hits the ground, you can tell spring is on the horizon. For many the cleaning supplies are coming out and it's time to clean up after a long winter. One Shelby County city that means an entire month devoted to helping it's citizens get ready for the warm weather.

The city of Alabaster is hosting it's Clean Sweep month in April. It is time for the city to 'clean up, clean out and haul off' their un-needed garbage. This time of the year is a great time for everyone to clean out closets, garages and junk drawers for a clean start. With the weather warming up by the day it defiantly makes it easier to make the change.

City dumpsters on Maintenance Drive off Sixth Avenue behind Buck Creek Park will open each Saturday in April from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. for residents to get rid of their unwanted items. Regular hours for the dumpsters are Monday thru Friday from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. According to the cities website the dump doesn't accept rocks, tires, propane or hazardous materials. For a full list of items the dump does not accept visit their website

April 12th from 8 a.m. until noon the Cintas document shredding truck will be behind Thompson Intermediate school for residents to safely get rid of important documents. Not only will the city dump be open on Saturdays but volunteers will be across the city planting flowers, picking up trash and completing other projects for the city.

If anyone would like to volunteer you can contact Council Member Rakestraw at rakestraw@cityofalabaster.com. For more information you can call (205)664-6800 or go to www.cityofalabaster.com.
