A Fierce Debate

By Amos Hollinhead

Campaign season is here at the University of Montevallo. For the Student Government Association, that means it is time to have another debate to see who is ready to take the reins of leading the student body. Students gathered inside Farmer Hall to hear the candidates' goals and visions about how they would run for their desired position. The candidates were ready to promote themselves, because they knew that every vote matters to them. Candidates were given time on stage to address issues and talk about the types of effort they would put into making an impact with SGA.

Rachael Swokowski moderating the SGA Debate
Current SGA President Rachael Swokowski moderated the debate and let students ask questions to the candidates. Students asked many questions, ranging from the candidates strengths and weaknesses and about their involvement with College Night.

However, the question about what song describes the candidates created the biggest stir. One candidate did not come up with a song, but with an artist in Beyonce, that represented her powerful personality in her alter ego Sasha Fierce.

Lakeyia Connor on how she feels about the candidates
After the debate, candidates wished each other luck on running their respective campaigns. Students left with an exciting feeling for the future of Montevallo. Student Lakeyia Connor was impressed with how well the candidates spoke and shared her aspiration of possibly being a part of SGA in the future.

"What really stood out to me was how calm and collective everyone was. To see all of the big ideas and plans they had, and to see those ideas get pushed was very cool. Maybe that could be me one day," she said.

If you are student and you want to vote for your favorite candidate, go to OrgSync with your Forum information and search for SGA Elections and cast your vote. Voting begins Monday and ends Wednesday at 3 p.m., with the winners being announced in Farmer Hall later during Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
