Yik Yak Invades Montevallo's Campus

by Gerald Cunningham

Students in the 21st century are addicted to social media websites such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Socializing with your friends over cellular devices is a trend in today's age. However, one of the new mobile apps that has swept the Montevallo campus is the anonymous social service, Yik Yak.

Students are Constantly on Yik Yak
Yik Yak is a new social media outlet where local cellular device users using the app can post like on Twitter and Facebook. The difference is everything is anonymous and no one even has to sign up. Students at the University of Montevallo have used the app to it's full advantage, positive and negative.

"Some people do use the app to bully people, but there are a lot of positives," says Devan Cooley, a Mass Comm major at the University. "You can use the app to post upcoming events and give out compliments during the day. I think that's pretty cool."

Reed Strength loves the app because of the wide variety of posts that you can view daily. "Those who use it like it. They have a place to vent to and it helps them point out random observations that other people can agree with."

You can download the Yik Yak App at the Apple App Store and the Android Market for free.
