UM Students Learn Self Defense

By: Liliya Shoemaker

UM hosted a free self-defense class at Bibb Graves Dance Studio last Thursday. Students came out to learn various self defense techniques. Although UM Campus is fairly safe, all students should know what to do in an unexpected physical attack.

Nicole Lee, a UM student, helped set this class up as a part of Safety Awareness on campus as a project for one of her classes. Although she organized this class, she also learned a lot. "I learned really how to just be aware of my surroundings and how to use force if an attacker was coming at me. I am now more aware of what to do with my body parts to fend for myself."

Brian Prady teaching self defense techniques
Brian Prady of the UM Police Department taught students different ways of defending themselves if an attacker strikes. He says "I want people to feel like they have some choice in the matter, nobody wants to feel helpless. So if I can give them a little bit of confidence, make them feel a little more empowered, a little in control of what happens to them, it means the world to the students."

Prady says that the best defense is to always be aware your surroundings and be alert. Also, traveling in packs at night will decrease chances of any attacks. While walking outside, try to remain from using your phone, this will keep you more alert.

Here are some other tips to keep in mind if you are attacked: because most of the attacks happen from the back, carry your purse or backpack in the front, be vocal, and don’t be afraid to strike back. Go for the sensitive places like head, neck, throat, and groin.
