Tutors and Tutees at UM's L-E-C

by Umar Nadir

The idea of students being self-supporting is very much a part of the ethos of the University of Montevallo.  Moreover, the Montevallo experience continues to challenge the student body and to provide the support needed to empower its students helping their individual growth.
Tutor Lacie Sutherland (L) and Tutee Eboni Wallace (R)
Freshman tutee Eboni Wallace says, “with tutoring being one-on-one you get more personal time like that personal connection that you need to ask more questions and ask for more examples.”
A huge part of student growth at the University comes from UM’s Learning Enrichment Center located on the lower level of CarMichael library. According to the Director of the L.E.C., Randi Tubbs, “the mission is to assist students in identifying their academic needs and to provide them with support that will strengthen their academic skills.” This has been the mission since the L.E.C. was first introduced to UM in 2009.
Today, on average 320 Montevallo students receive tutoring services per year for free.  Subjects range from any of the foreign languages to:
Basic chemistry, general chemistry, pre-calculus algebra, introductory physics, college physics, university physics, principles of marketing, principles of accounting one & two, intermediate accounting, business finance, quantitative methods, finite mathematics, the nature of mathematics, pre-calculus trigonometry, pre-calculus algebra & trigonometry, and statistics.
Lacie Sutherland who has tutored since 2012 says, “it’s such a laid-back position and yet so professional.  I love knowing I get paid to help fellow students learn.”
