Miss Black and Gold Pageant

By: Rio Smith

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity hosted its annual "Miss Black and Gold Pageant."

The pageant was the last event for "Alpha Week," which was this current Montevallo chapter's first ever "Alpha Week."

Seven women participated in the event. The judges used grade point average, fundraising, elegance, talent, and confidence as criteria for grading the women's performances.

"The pageant is about celebrating our women," said Chris Sanders, an Alpha Phi Alpha member who helped the women backstage.

Other awards were given, such as Miss Congeniality and Best Talent.

Taylor Tolliver took home the title of Miss Black and Gold. She was crowned by the former champion of 2011-2012, Talerie Jackson.

"Since I'm about to graduate, it's time to move on and let somebody else get this opportunity to be Miss Black and Gold," said Jackson, a student majoring in Biology.

This year's winner will represent the University of Montevallo at the district level's version of "Miss Black and Gold" pageant, in which she will compete with all of the winners from every college in Alabama.

The district pageant will be held in November at the University of Alabama.
