A Golfers Journey

Friday, October 7th

Story by Wyatt Hall

Montevallo Golfer Wes Cain is returning to the University for his second year. Cain was forced to miss the second semester of his Freshman year due a concussion he suffered.
While moving into the Peck dorm on campus he hit his head on the back of a cabinet, “ I didn’t think anything of it at first” said Cain but not long after he became affected by it. “ It turned into the worst six months of my life” he described.
Cain’s injury was far more severe than a normal concussion. His injury was to his Cerebellum, a part of the brain that helps control motor skill and balance. Normal everyday tasks became too much for Cain to handle.
Eventually his parents decided to bring him home until the next semester. The recovery period began but was rough for Cain. “ I couldn’t do anything” he says “ getting out of bed was the hardest. I would throw up every time because I was so dizzy.”
After six and half months, he was finally able to play golf again. “Getting back out there was tough at first but I continued to work.”
The journey did not end there however. Cain is currently ineligible to play for the Montevallo Golf Team. He does not meet the hour requirements because his injury forced him to miss a semester.

Cain has not let that stop him and looks forward to competing again next semester.
