PHS to Compete at Bands of America

Story by: Cory Graffeo

A high school band from Shelby County, Alabama is heading to their biggest battle yet. Pelham High School will compete at the Bands of America competition this Fall.

This clash of the bands is held at Jacksonville State University every year. Pelham is one out of three bands from the state of Alabama to attend this year. They are also the first band ever from Shelby County to attend.

All members of the band, including colorguard, have been practicing for this opportunity since June. Some sections get together every day to get in as much practice time as possible.

The band director, Justin Ward, says that it's not about winning but about giving it everything they have. He told the band, "The only competition you have is with yourself. If you do the best you can do, you have already won."

All band members set a list of goals at the beginning of the season to help them stay motivated. Their main goal is to make the top 10 at the competition.

Some members are more excited about the experience than actually winning. Hannah Plant says, "I get to perform with my fellow band family."

Pelham will head to the competition on October first. For more information on Bands of America click here.
