More Than Art

Story by: Ben Smith

Lynita Motes is a professional portrait artist, who has steered her career in a direction that not only builds her business but ties some of her big passions together.

For a portrait artist, there are many stages to arrive at a final product that is presentable to the client.  A stage that Lynita has added to her process is tied in with her christian faith.

When Lynita first receives a commission from a client, she goes and meets the subject, takes pictures and makes notes about them.  Next she goes and draws out the portrait to show the client and get it approved. After this she begins to paint.

As she begins to construct the subject's likeness on the canvas, she looks at the pictures she took earlier in the process.

There is a large amount of time spent looking at the subject and in Lynita's words:

"By the end I’m amazed at how beautiful this person is in the inside and out, it’s just never failed."

The last step is a bigger area where Lynita stand out. Throughout the time she spends looking at the subject she prays for them.

Lynita explains, "I began to pray for each person I was painting as I painted them. And I would jot down little notes just as I painted, what I prayed and maybe even a scripture if God brought a scripture to my mind."

After the portrait is finished she delivers the piece with a letter that includes the prayers she prayed about the subject in all aspects of their life. This is her connection from her passion for art and her passion for her faith.
