New Music Fraternity Arrives on Campus

Story by: Anleia Nance

From the recruitment of new members to wearing gear flaunting Greek letters, the University of Montevallo is home to many students who are active in sororities and fraternities. Since the establishment of many Greek organizations on campus, the university welcomed a new music fraternity known as Sigma Alpha Iota.

Although they are called a fraternity, the members of Sigma Alpha Iota are all females who are on a mission to promoting the significance of music everywhere. "We're especially about empowering women in music," said Sigma Alpha Iota President, Kayla Shelton. "We support female composers and their works."

The organization started four years ago when the group was a colony. On June 13th 2015, the women were initiated as the charter members of the Mu Eta chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota.

"The girls in the chapter have worked extremely hard," said music teacher and Sigma Alpha Iota advisor, Dr. Lori Ardovino. " I think they're a great bunch of young women and all of them seemed very excited about organizing and having this group on campus."

Aside from going to music rehearsals, the women get together in Davis Hall to have their formal meetings to discuss various topics such as their official spring recruitment and other upcoming events.

For those interested in joining, you must have at least a 2.5. G.P.A. and have taken a music course. Also, the music chapter is open to all students who are taking up different majors.

Being a new organization, the women of Sigma Alpha Iota is continuing to spread their name on campus and their love of music everywhere.
