Montevallo Moves Foward with Handicap Accessibility

BY ELIAH MCCUTCHEN

The University of Montevallo is home to some of the oldest buildings in Alabama. However, with the campus's rich history comes to need for renovation to accommodate students.

One building administration has been discussing is Napier Hall. The men's residence hall is home to three of the campus's fraternities, yet only has one handicap accessible door that leads to the basement, and has no way to get from floor to floor.

Andrew Brown, a member of Phi Gamma Delta, has no way to access his chapter room. Along with the problem in Napier, the university has attempted to renovate other buildings on campus.

A chair lift was installed in Reynold's Hall last semester to allow Andrew access to and from the theater on the second floor. While helpful, Andrew says the lift has already broken down several times since April.

But building access isn't the only problem. Montevallo's infamous brick roads make navigation on a wheel chair almost impossible, leaving Andrew struggling in his everyday commute.

Andrew says he would like for the university to stop thinking as handicap accessibility as an option to allow other disable students a chance to experience Montevallo's wonderful campus.
