Timothy McMillan Mixes Religion with Fashion

By Gerald Cunningham

Timothy McMillan has never been one of the people to express his emotions through words, which is why he uses art as his voice. For the past year, this Montevallo senior has been working on his art exhibition to show his true feelings about one particular subject; The use of religion in fashion. Tim believes that religion is a sacred thing, and using religious items as a fashion sense are blasphemous and unappealing.

"A lot of people who wear rosaries don't know the meaning behind it," says Timothy McMillan. "They don't have a connection with it. They don't know the history around it, and they just wear it. And a lot of times you see them using it and referring to it in different ways that are not uplifting to the religious culture."

Tim strives to show the beauty of religion in his art.
Tim and his advisor/mentor, Joe Bennett, have been working hard in Peterson and Bloch Hall trying to perfect and finish certain pictures getting ready for the show, and Joe thinks Tim is in a great position to wake up the campus.

"I think it's interesting," says Joe. "I think it could be edgy. I think it could be contemporary because he's combing medieval art and fashion."

Timothy McMillan is not finished with his exhibition just yet, but he has been working to make sure that he reaches his deadline of November 16th. Tim also told me that he spends at least five hours in the studio every day, and will sometimes take his art with him anywhere around campus to just to get a little more done.

Tim has been spent many long nights working on his show.
"I have a distinctive eye for detail and beauty, and that’s one of the major things when it comes to art."

Tim has been working on this show for the past two years altogether. Despite all of the changes in ideas and long hours, Tim is prepared to showcase his work before he graduates in May 2015. Look at some of the past art shows from Montevallo students on The Montevallo Art Page.
