Mocktails Anyone?

By Brianna Davis

Thursday Night at the University of Montevallo, students were drinking and having a good time in Farmer Hall with the help of live music from Steve Means, an artist who has been featured a few times on MTV.

UPC, the University Program Council, provided mocktails to the student body. What is a mocktail? It’s a cocktail without the alcohol.

A few of the UPC representatives bartended, offering a variety of drinks to mix like tea, lemonade, sprite, cherry juice, and orange juice.

UPC hosts several events throughout the year for students to get into the campus spirit and actually stay on campus during the weekend.

According to UPC Representative Hunter Huie, a junior, UPC has planned “big weekend blowouts” to keep students at Montevallo during the weekends.

The first “weekend blowout” is an International Food Fair, several other organizations have already volunteered to provide various food to showcase. There is will even be an African Tribal Dance team soon.

The goal for UPC is to give students the college campus life like other universities. And so far, students are impressed with their efforts. Freshman, Tiara Williams said, “[The mocktails] it’s pretty good. I like [the food] a lot”

What really attracted the students to Farmer was the music according to junior transfer student, Donnie, “He was very good. He had like a mixer of like Rock, and Indie, and like Pop, so it’s really cool.”

During the event, students were able to sign the pledge to not drink and drive. Which the whole purpose of Mocktails was to provide students a safe and different way to have a good time.
