UM Stands Up to Bullying

by: Margetta Thomas

The University of Montevallo decided to bring awareness to bullying when they held an open forum on March 27.

The Forum featured bullying advocate, Jamie Nabozny, who shared his story about being bullied just because he was gay.

The David Matthews Center for Civic Life was a sponsor for the event, and has been holding open forums since 2012 in order to help communities stand up to bullying.

Hannah Gentry, an intern at the David Matthews Center, says that "Every thirty minutes, a child commits suicide as a direct result of being bullied."

During the forum, students were asked to explain how bullying affects their community. Pamela Faddis, a student at UM, says that the easiest way to stand up to bullying, is to simply speak up.

"A lot of people would just walk by and pretend it didn't happen or something. If you say something most of the time, they'll either stop or you can actually get involved with it."
