Birmingham Dogs get in the Halloween Spirit

Story by Courtney Soumeillan

Halloween comes every October, and with it comes costumes, parties, and treats.
These festivities are usually limited to humans, but two Birmingham based organizations are working to change that.

Dog Days of Birmingham and Bama Bully Rescue partnered to present "Puppaween" on October 22, a carnival-like event giving dogs and their owners an opportunity to celebrate the holiday in costume.

The event also promoted adoption and fostering of our canine friends.

In honor of National Pit Bull Awareness Day, volunteer coordinator for Bama Bully Rescue Jennifer Mitchell hopes to persuade perspective families to consider adopting the misunderstood breed.

"To teach people that bully breeds and pit bulls are not bad dogs, that it's usually the owners, and they're just misunderstood," Mitchell said."Don't judge. Judge with your heart. Not your eyes."

It wasn't just pit bulls that enjoyed the days festivities though. Pups of all breeds and their owners were welcome to enjoy toys, games, doggie treats, and even a bubble machine. There was even a costume contest.

From a taco, to Lilo and Stitch, to the Wizard of Oz cast, there was no shortage of colorful characters taking part in the the Halloween fun.

When the fun and games were over, Mitchell hopes that there is one message that everyone takes from her event. "Always adopt," she said.
